RABBANI is an award-winning nasyid
group that consists of the most members, previously 7 now 9 altogether
(plus 2 musicians). They are Mohamad Asri Ibrahim as the lead vocal,
together with Mohd Asri Ubaidullah, Ahmad Shafie, Zulkiflee Azman, Mohd
Loqman Abd. Aziz, Rithauddeen Yaakob, Azadan Abd Aziz, Nazrul Azhar
Tamrin and Mohd. Afandi Hishahbudin.
Rabbani, which means 'yang soleh', came to the attention of
Malaysian music lovers in 1997 when they released their self-titled
debut album. At a time when nasyid songs ruled the mainstream market,
their sales for that album shot up to 90,000 units.
They went on to release 8 more albums in a span of 5 years - Arah
Dari Mana
Ke Mana
(1998), Muhammad Ya Habibi
(1999), Ramadhan Remix - compilation (1999), Pergi Tak Kembali
(2000), Iqrar 1421 - compilation (2000), Intifada (2001),
Aman (2002) and Qiblat (2002).
All of Rabbani's songs and performances received amazing response from
people from all walks of life and all age groups. Thus, it came as no
surprise when Rabbani managed to be the most popular nasyid group in
Malaysia for a few years running.
The members of Rabbani were bold enough to incorporate modern music
into their nasyid songs, instead of making music that is merely dominated
by the sound of percussion instruments. They have succeeded in creating
an interesting fusion of contemporary nasyid music, appealing to a larger
(and younger) audience.
Their 6th effort, Iqrar 1421 was chosen as the Best Nasyid
Album in Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) 2001. This album also
won them the Best Vocal Performance in an Album (Group) award.
Rabbani managed to clinch the Best Nasyid Album award for the
next 2 years, winning them in AIM 2002 for the album Intifada
and in AIM 2003 for the album Qiblat. This means that
they have won the award for 3 consecutive years and there's no stopping
for Rabbani.
Rabbani became the first group under the Intifada label,
a subsidiary of KRU Music Group. Their first album under the Intifada
banner was titled Qiblat, which was produced by Amaludin Syukri
(Archie), Edry Abdul Halim & Ustaz Sohibul Hj Sabikin. The album
hit the shelves on 26 November 2002.
Interestingly, this album combines hints of ethnic Malay, Arabic &
Hindi music (e.g. conga, tabla, bongo, maracas, jimbe & kompang)
with programmed music. Qiblat also incorporates 5 hadiths
& surahs from the al-Quran between the tracks as a prelude
to each song.
This album, which is AIM 2003's Best Nasyid Album winner
features hit songs like Satu Qiblat Yang Sama, Pengantin Baru, Setanggi
Kasih and Handzalah. Others include Cinta dan Cita-Cita, Anugerah, Pahlawan
Agama, Musafir Kelana, Impian Hamba & Kalimah.
Rabbani released their next album under Intifada on 18 November
2003 - simply entitled Epik. The album features commercial
pop songs for a change! Just imagine the collaboration between Rabbani
& KMG's pool of talents such as Nine (Phyne Ballerz), Neves
(PrettyUgly) & Edry (KRU). The first single off
the album is the retro-influenced Subuh Yang Terakhir, written
by Edry. There's also the catchy song Epik, which is a story
about Prophet Musa A.S. As always it also includes various hadiths
& al-Quran verses which complemented each of the tracks.
Yalla Beena! Jom! Let's Go! is their compilation album,
released 06 July 2004. The album contains 18 tracks, including five
brand-new songs.
Yalla Beena, which literally means 'let's go' (marilah),
is the first single from the album and features a duet with the award-winning
composer, Yasin. Through the collaboration, the uptempo Yalla Beena
helped defines Rabbani's unique contemporary sound.
Rabbani even remade a hit 1995 nasyid song Teman Sejati made
popular by Brothers, which coincidentally, Yasin was a member! Other
songs in the album includes Assalamualaikum (the song that
introduced Rabbani to the industry, which was given a breath of fresh
air with its new free pop arrangement), Fikirkanlah (written
by Ameng of Spring) and Berkelana.
Released on 10 October 2005, Suara Takbir comes out
as Rabbani’s contribution to the fasting month of Ramadhan and
hereto the celebration of Syawal. This album featured a classic Raya
song sung by the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee entitled Suara Takbir
(thus the album title) remade by Rabbani in nasyid style.
If you are looking for nasyid songs with a modern twist, then Rabbani's
the answer.
