ELITE
Elite was KRU Records’ first
‘baby’, which was conceived in 1996.
The original line up – Nor Azzarima Zawari (Azza),
Sasha Saidin (Sasha), Norwati Sadali (Watie),
Arbaiyah Abdul Manan (Abby) and Azlinda Rafar
(Linda) – were gathered after attending
auditions held by KRU who’s in search of a new girlband
under the KRU Records banner.
The initial idea was to name the group Baby G
but unfortunately, at the same time, the name was introduced as
a brand name of a watch. The name Elite was later
chosen to reflect the girls’ initial beginnings as models
and actresses. The girls were first introduced to Malaysian audience
when they appeared in KRU’s concert in the 1995 Awas
da’ Concert tour. They were then featured in a
track from KRU’s Ooh! La! La! album titled
Diari Metropolitan a year later.
Elite burst into the local music scene with the debut album Catwalk
in 1996, unleashing their first single called G.I.G.
and subsequent hits like Manisnya Senyumanmu and Di
Pintu Syurga, a duet with the KRU brothers.
Their energetic performances and good looks won fans from all
around the region and they then released their second effort in
1998, Tamparan Wanita. The album features hit
songs like Trauma, Dua Hati, Dirinya Dirimu Diriku and
the title track Tamparan Wanita. The video of the song
was even nominated for the Best Music Video Award in
Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) 1999.
Despite various controversies, continuous criticisms and constant
changes in the members’ line-up (new faces come and go –
Fiza, Hana, Sofia), Elite was still going strong with their third
album Idola in 1999 (hit songs: Aku Siapa
Kau Siapa, Potret Lama & Bila).
Their final release with KRU Records is Merbahaya
(2000), which is compilation of their previous hits and two new
tracks – Merbahaya & Selamat Tinggal Teman.
Elite even joined forces with other artistes in 2002 for the 10/10
album, singing a cover of KRU's Mengerti.
To date, they have sold more than 100,000 albums, maintaining
their position as the most popular girlband in Malaysia.
